Book review

On being gay, thoughts on family faith and love. By Brian Mc Naught, 1988 St Martin's Press New York.

I'm including this book even though it's a bit old to show what good you can get from second hand book shops - in this case from Elizabeth's Bookshop Perth. I believe this would be a good read especially, but not only for people who come from a catholic gay background..

The author is a self proclaimed "Irish Catholic Homosexual" and a qualified sex therapist. I found the book a fascanating read as he goes through each section with titles like "On being yourself", growing up gay, Friends and lovers, The journey forward and Celebration.

Brian tells stors about his life and experiences. It starts as a diary written in 1978 and goes through until 1983. Please look past it's age if you are looking for some true stories, laughter, tears and celebration in all things about being gay.

As one reviewr said, "Brian McNaught has a special knack knack for enabling to understand what it means to be gay......He  provides a look sometimes humourous, always at such concerns as whether or not to "come out" maintaning ties with ones family, developing an honest relationship with God, dealing with AIDS, and accepting oneself as decent and worthy of respect.

Elizabeth's Second Hand Bookshops often have gay and lesbian sections. Great if you can't always afford brand new prices. Check telephone directory for listings. See what else they have.

Openly Gay, Openly Christian, How the bible is really gay friendly. Rev. Samuel Kader

I received this book as a Christmas present and after reading it, at first admittadley with some anticipation, I now consider it a CLASSIC.  It was a real life changer for me.  I first read it intending with open eyes to what God would say to me regardless of any tradition, wishful thinking on my part in any way of thought or whatever either I or any person wanted me to believe.

I was TOTALLY OPEN to what God would say and YES, I was radically changed.

I  came to see for possibly the first time that, YES the bible really IS GAY FRIENDLY. The author uses evangelical tools such as history, scripture[ both commonly known and less recognised ones] as well as peoples experiences to prove his point.

Can it be? The bible gay friendly? Surely not. I challenge you to check it out for yourself. Be open to what the Holy Spirit is saying. You may be surprised too!

Book review

The word is out: The bible reclaimed for lesbians and gay men. 365 Daily meditations by Chris Glaser

This is an excelent little book, well researched and one I have gone back to read each day year after year. It is a book I have gone back to and received much inner spiritual strength from so I would reccomend it to any person of a gay/ lesbian type nature who is looking for a devotional guide that is relevant to and not critical but actually supportive of their sexuality. I t's not so much a book about sex but rather a devotional guide aimed at people of diverse sexualities, mainly gay and lesbian people. The author approaches the bible as  a student rather than a scholar and seeks spiritual truth rather than historical fact. He starts each days reading from The Revised Standard version of the bible with an interpretation than usually finishes with a simple prayer.  He try's to make the bible verses and teaching non - gender specific so that ALL READERS  feel comfortable. He promotes the good news of the gospel for all GLBTI people. It makes a great gift as it was for me by a gay priest originally, a practical gift you can go back to again and again. Buy one for yourself and one as a gift for a struggling GLBTI friend. Although written by a man it would be suitable for anyone of varied gender.
